I am grateful that this branch of abrogation is outside of our scope, namely the abrogation doctrine. |

Fatoohi, in his book "Abrogation in the Quran and Islamic Law", p.2, mentions the narration attributed to Umar (RA) in which he acknowledges the legal expertise of Ubayy (RA) regrading the Quran but says that he forgoes some of what Ubayy says because Ubayy told him that he will never abandon anything he heard from the Prophet (PBUH)". Fatoohi concludes from this narration that Ubayy was opposed to the notion of abrogation. Fatoohi adds later that Ubayy's statement proves that the written Quran (Mushaf) has all the verses of the Quran that were ever revealed, thus rejecting the notion of abrogation of recitation (نسخ التلاوة). I for one agree with that conclusion, which is further confirmed by the narration told by Ibn Al-Zubair (RA) that he asked Uthmaan (RA) why write in the Mushaf verse 2:240, which Ibn Al-Zubair believed was abrogated, and Uthmaan replied, as Ubayy did, that he would not leave out anything he heard from the Prophet (PBUH). |
