I like Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar's translation of
مقاليد as "passkeys" best. Another excellent translation is that of Dr. M. M. Ghali as "prerogatives" . I suggest,
{39:63} To Him belong the passkeys of the heavens and the earth. And they who have disbelieved in the signs of God - it is those who are the losers.Quote:
{39:64} Say, [O Muhammad], "Is it other than God that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?"
This command is not limited to the prophet (PBUH), so I suggest dropping the interjection,
{39:64} Say, "Is it other than God that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?"Quote:
{39:65} And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with God, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers."
I suggest,
{39:65} And it has certainly been revealed to you [, O Muhammad,] and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with God [in worship], your work would surely sink, and you would surely be among the losers."Quote:
{39:66} Rather, worship [only] God and be among the grateful.
I suggest,
{39:66} Rather, it is God then you are to worship and be among the thankful.
